Fishing Cat Distribution

Fishing Cat DistributionThe range of the fishing cat is an indicator of the working of ecosystems in south and southeast Asia. They live in dense vegetation alongside watercourses and mangroves. Destruction of these areas to make clearings for human living brings about drought and floods.
Fishing cats are seen in Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Thailand, India, Pakistan and China. There are two subspecies of fishing cat: Prionailurus Viverrinus Viverrinus, which is found in India, south east Asia and Sumatra, and Prionailurus Viverrinus Risophores, in Java and Bali.
