Aegean is the only breed of cats native to Greece. It is said to have originated from Greek Cycladic Islands located in the Aegean Sea. Formal development was initiated in the last decade of twentieth century by Cat Fancy breeders of Greece. As such it is one of the newer cat breeds and often mistakenly thought by some to be somewhat rare, even as the Aegean Cat itself is widespread throughout Greece.
Aegean Cat is a medium sized feline with a predominantly white coat. There are other colors too including red, blue, cream and black, though a third to two thirds of the fur is white. Overall appearance is bi-colored or tri-colored. Though less profuse than those of Turkish Angora, hair are longish that protect it against cold winter, with a ruff around neck. There are no down hair. Built is athletic and muscular and the cat is known to be a good mouse hunter, a source of its admiration, particularly in rural areas. Body and tail are long. Head is broad and ears are widely set on the skull. Eyes are oriental in their shape with a color often in shades of green. Legs are strong and paws rounded.
In its natural environment, the Aegean is an independent yet friendly feline. It often lives in small groups and is very fond of fish, its chief food item. The cute cat is often seen sitting at beach, waiting patiently for fishermen as they bring back their daily catch in the evening. The cat is well liked in its native lands.
Apart from its beauty, the Aegean Cat is a very admirable animal. It makes a good pet and is quite comfortable residing in apartments. The cat is intelligent, active and good natured. Also it is considered to be a social, lively and communicative feline. As a breed, the Aegean Cat is placed in the Semi-longhaired, light European/Continental type.

THERE IS A BREEDER IN GREECE EXISTS INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED THAT MAKES REPRODUCTION THE CAT OF AEGEAN INFORMATION GATAAIGAIOU@OTENET.GR
I'm having trouble finding anything about the size and weight of this breed; medium is a rather broad term. Also, is a calico/ tortoiseshell and white coat a possible trait, or a reproduction from cross breeding?
I think I may have an Aegean cat. He was a rescue, found when he was six months old. He looks and acts exactly like any description I have ever seen or read about the breed, but could it be possible? I live in Canada.

Aegean cats aren't a new breed. As a naturally occuring breed they have been in Greece-mainly in the islands-for milleniums. They've surely been mixed with other cats over the centuries, such as the Syrian cats, the european felis Sylvestris, the egyptian cats and others.
However, due to geographical isolation of their habitat, these cats developed some uniform features that help them identify as a different breed.Perhaps the most interesting thing on them is the type of fur coat. From december to March these cats look hairy, which probably helps them keep the salty spray of humid ocean winds away from their soft skin underneath. In spring and summer their fur coat is shorthair to help them avoid heat-shock, as the sunlight in their habitat is exceptionally strong.Only their long tail remains longhair all year round, giving them a pretty appearance as the cats wave their tails like a big feather, which also acts as a pillow for them when they want to sleep. They're quite intelligent for a cat and can be trained for the basics.Although they may look like an ordinary street cat to the unkeen eye, they're surely a separate and unique cat species. Since its a recently recognized breed of a cat, not all Aegean cat specimens bear all of the breed's standards to the same extent, however as interest for this local species is steadily increasing among breeders in Greece, some fine quality Aegean cat specimens start appearing more and more in cat shows, contributing a great deal to the betterment and preservation of this beautifull naturally occuring species.
