Read this a little while back on the Asiatic Lions blog - forgot to share it. A healthy lioness and an adult leopard were lost to open wells around the Gir forest nearly a fortnight ago. Really sad news. There are thousands of open wells dug in and around the only sanctuary of Asiatic Lions in the world. Every now and then they claim precious lives. Many consider them to be the biggest threat to the lions of Gir. More here.
Wildlife Conservation Trust of India, in collaboration with the Lions of Gir Foundation is working towards building concrete barricades around open wells in Gir. There are over nine thousand such wells in Gir. Some have been covered up. Many still need to be made safe. The Lions of Gir Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization have their new site at Lionsofgir.com. The founder Steve Mandel, a very talented photographer, has indicated to me via email that soon he'll be able to accept donations online via paypal/credit card and place the buttons on his site. So hopefully anybody who's willing to contribute towards the welfare of critically endangered Asiatic Lions will be able to make a difference soon :)
